“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lay down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” -Psalm 23:1-3 Shepherds protect their sheep. They watch over them; guide them. Our Lord Jesus does those things for us, for we are his sheep, his children. There are a few things about guidance. First of all, we should ask the Lord for assistance with every decision, big or small.
He won’t judge you if you ask for help or guidance on a decision or problem that seems dumb to you. He just likes taking care of us. When you ask for him to help you make a choice, you truly have to want his answer. You shouldn’t do it if you don’t intend on doing what he says. The Lord answers when he knows the time is right. You heard me. When he knowsthe time is right, and trust me, he does. He speaks to us in different ways whether it be a dream, certain events that take place, through another person, through the Bible, or even just straight up talking.
But here’s the thing. You have to be patient, you have to listen and pay attention. You don’t want to miss him, because then you might get angry with him for not answering you when he tried. He will speak in his own time, not ours. Patience is very important in just about all situations. I know it can be hard to wait but I also know it will all be worth it when you hear his voice. No one can make you hear him or talk to him. The choice is up to you and you alone.
If you do want to hear him, then there are a couple things you can do to grow closer to God. First off we have to talk to him. There is no right or wrong way to pray, except for not doing it at all. It doesn’t matter what you talk to him about; whether it be how your day went or something exciting or sad that happened. He just likes hearing from us like any parent would. Secondly, having a dedicated quiet time with him is very important. Reading the Bible is a great thing to do. Jesus can use scripture to speak to you in so many ways, and it’s at least interesting for me to read about the time he was alive and the times before.
Sitting in silence with no one except the Lord is a very relaxing exercise, and it will fill you up with joy and happiness. Everyone’s relationship with God is different and different people do different things to strengthen it. But remember, when you ask Jesus something, be patient and pay attention. He will speak in his own time.
